What is Davidson Domains?

Last year, we launched Davidson Domains, a pilot program that gives faculty, staff, and students a “domain of one’s own”—an online space for websites, blogs, exhibits, portfolios, and more. Users name their domain (i.e. www.yourdomain.org) and maintain total control over it. Participants can create a domain of their own for their courses—but they can also use it outside of coursework. This pilot is a partnership between Digital Studies and ITS and funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

About this Learning Community

This fall we are convening a learning community that explores the potential and challenges of Davidson Domains.  We will explore both practical and theoretical dimensions of digital domains, including what tools are available, how to use them, and why we use them. The learning community will have a monthly meeting, featuring a guest speaker and/or short readings, as well as regular hands-on workshops. Participants will also meet monthly in small groups to tackle a particular challenge or project.

What will the learning community do?

During the fall semester we will explore both practical and theoretical dimensions of student owned domains, the “reclaim the web” movement, and the pedagogical implications of using webhosting in the classroom.  These discussions will include what tools are available, how to use them, and why we use them. The learning community will have a monthly meeting, featuring a guest speaker and/or short readings, as well as regular hands-on workshops. Readings will be selected based on the interests of the group.

I’m so excited about this group! Thank you for setting it up. It’s going to be so helpful for me, especially this semester as I make use of a class Domain for the first time.
